Dungeons and Dragons: The Movie Review
by Chung Y. Chow
OK, so we've all so far heard some mixed predictions of the new Dungeons and Dragons movie to be released on Friday. Just by looking at the commercials, it looks to be another one liner cheezie movie made for the kiddies.
The type of movie Willow and Dragonheart was geared towards. No blow against these two movies but most Fantasy RPers that I know thought it to be too "kiddish". I liked them but I agreed.
At least, that's what I thought of D&D The Movie as well and decided it was something that could wait until DVD/Video.
It was a couple of days ago, Don Whitsell, Webmaster of DNDmovie.com, RPGC Founder and AA's VP of Commercial Relations got a hold of me and told me he was coming down to L.A. for a screening and got me a ticket.
What the heck. I wanted to hook up with Don and meet with him. We sat down in one of Fox Studio's Screening theatre and I did some chit chat with him and his wife.
After a few words from the director, Corey Solomon the movie started. I still didn't know how the movie would turn out.
I must say it surprised me. The plot is pretty much your classical D&D adventure. Stop the evil high mage and his thrawted magic council from taking over the kingdom and overpowering the kid Empress. They got that right.
The special effects were awesome! You haven't lived until you've see a full on Dragon battle in the skies. They got their dragons right too! It wasn't just a bunch of giant iguana's slithering tongues at each other.
This movie had EVERYTHING you would want from a fantasy adventure. Sword fights, magic battles, thieves guilds, lizard men, beholders... oh my! (BTW, they did a kick ass job on the beholders! Next to the dragons, they were my favorites.)
Was is made for the Kiddies? I'd say no. It was made for the Fantasy fans. It wasn't gory enough to not to take your kids to it, but it isn't all cutesie prisy dance in your underwear fantasy movie either. I personally think the balance was just right for a PG-13 movie.
I'm very nasty with my movie reviews. That's why I don't do any of them and I usually say, "You may like it, you may not. See for yourself." For this movie, I'd say go see it! Especially if you are a D&D fan! You won't be sorry. :)
Dungeons and Dragons: The Movie premiers on Friday, December 8th. For more information, check out dndmovie.com.
